Community Involvement

Carreen Kouts, Chair

Bunnie Williams of Shamrock Glass brought a great idea to the committee. Based on an article about the village of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, the committee decided that a “shop local, shop small” campaign in the area would definitely involve the community. The Seaford Enhancement Team [S.E.T.] took the lead and started an email campaign to shop at Burton Bros. Hardware on Saturday, March 17th.

The idea took off through Facebook entries and shares, tweets and re-tweets, and articles in the Sussex County Post and Seaford Star. The story was picked up by Delaware News Journal and WBOC-TV.

Ron and Ric Marvel Serving customers

Ron and Ric Marvel were overwhelmed by the outpouring of support on the 17th when people came and shopped.  The hardware store in downtown Seaford was build in the 19th century and is on the Historic Register. Ron and Ric’s family purchased the business in 1954 – making it a true “legacy” business.

Ron and Ric have given back many hours to the local community as volunteer firemen. When you are asleep, the brothers may very well be out fighting a fire or saving lives.

The Committee has taken “involvement” in the community one step further through a partnership with the Seaford Star. The Chamber now has a monthly page in the Star, supported by advertising of several Chamber members. Look for the page each month.
